A Voice from Harper's Ferry, 1859
Published in Paperback by Ww Pub (January, 2000)
Average review score:

This Book Should Be In Every American History Class! As a historian of the abolitionist period, and the raid at Harpers Ferry in particular, I strongly recommend the work of Osborn Perry Anderson. His work is the only surviving manuscript which gives the story from the perspective of the men who fought against slavery with John Brown -- not the confederacy or other biased versions. Anderson was also an African American, and thus further adds a missing perspective. I find it unacceptable to buy into the "academic" establishment's version of history in this regard, that Anderson, an African American, does not carry equal weight with the white writers of the time. If we acknowledge that racism was a bias in historical accounts, then Osborn Perry Anderson's account shares what it meant without the racist distortions, as he was part of a multiracial movement for emancipation. While the text covers some aspects of raid that may embarass some, the truth needs to be told. It should also be noted that Osborn Perry Anderson him self was given the special Sword that belonged to President George Washington, as one who would uplift the new nation of justice. Brown recognized him as a leader, and his leadership was well proven in his ability to escape at the end of the battle, and seek refuge in Canada. He saved the day with a more objective account, which was edited by Mary Shadd, and published in 1861. He seems to avoid mention of some details to protect comrades working against slavery, and their families. Finally, the book helps us to reflect on where we need to go from here, in order to achieve justice and equality. It is a great inspirational and yet factual book. It is excellent and highly recommended!

News Of The Great World.News Of The Great World. Oh believe it. To lay all these ghosts, the pond scum all above us. Halbgötterdämmerung. A British Braverman whose protagonist isn't dead but seated on plush red velvet. Probably the play of the fin de siècle.

Windows Nt 4 Workstation Unleashed
Published in Paperback by Sams Publishing (01 November, 1996)
Average review score:

Best NT book, periodMathias and Osborne start off with some essential facts about NT and how it came to be. Then, they go into the basics of using NT. After that, you can use the book's contents any way you please. Very organized, very well-written, and very well indexed. I would recommend this for anyone serious about using Microsoft's only alternative to DOS and the GUI overlays that comprise DOS-based systems like W95/W98. This book is excellent. You would be remiss not to own a copy.

Within Prison Walls
Published in Paperback by Spruce Gulch Pr (September, 1991)
Average review score:

Original written in 1914 of inhumane inmate conditionsWithin Prison Walls is a shocking yet heartwarming description of conditions at Auburn Prison written by an humanitarian warden who submitted himself to a one-week experience as an inmate. Reading it is painful, and requires frequent interruptions for recovery from the descriptions and for reflection on the horrors of the treatment given and the attitudes shown to prisoners. They are seen as less than human beings, and, sadly, essentially little has changed since this 1914 description. The author, Warden Tom Osborne shows his strength of character and his empathy in his goal of prison reform. It reads well and should be required reading for all concerned with penology, mental health, sociology and studies of the seemingly immutable sadism that is imbedded in human nature. The current reprinting has beenn edited and carried out by the author's son, and possesses historic value.

Women Leaders and the Church: 3 Crucial Questions (3 Crucial Questions)
Published in Paperback by Baker Book House (15 March, 2000)
Average review score:

Excellent historical and exegetical workIn recent years Christians have become increasingly polarized around the question of what and how women should serve in the church and in the world, with rival organizations, conferences, books and articles all catching the public eye. Competing explanations of scripture, of history, and of human nature all vie for attention, while on the ground, churches and Christian ministries find themselves in tension between members who not only disagree, but question the fidelity of those with whom they differ. Linda Belleville has served us well with a book that moves sure-footedly through the issues: she gathers and concisely presents evidence for the actual roles women played in New Testament times, sets well the context for understanding Biblical statements, and judiciously presents and weighs differing interpretations of crucial texts about women and about leadership in the church. This is a book to move the discussion forward, eliminating some points of contention, and clarifying what's at issue in others.
